Benguet is the gateway
to the Cordillera Region . It lies on the southernmost part of the
Region. It is bounded by Mountain Province on the north, Pangasisnan on
the south, La Union and Ilocos Sur on the west, and Nueva Vizcaya and
Ifugao on the east.
Straddling
on the Cordillera Mountain Ranges and with Mount Pulag, the second
highest mountain in the Philippines, lying in its territory, Benguet is
considered as the Roof of Northern Luzon.
This
province started as one of the six Commandancias Politico Military in
the Mountain Region under the Spanish rule. It was established as a
province on November 22, 1990 under the American rule. With the
establishment of (old) Mt. Province in 1907, Benguet became one of its
sub-provinces on August 13, 1908. The province once again as Mt.
Province is divided into four separate provinces.
While the
province is described as mountainous, Benguet is considered as the
“Salad Bowl of the Philippines” because of its huge production of upland
vegetables. Vegetable farms are seen etched as terraces on the
mountainside.
